Medieval Josselin and its castle

An hour's drive from Moêlan, Josselin castle, a majestic fortress dominates the canal and has been the home of the Rohan family for more than 10 centuries! The castle is still a residence of Josselin de Rohan who works tirelessly for its conservation. The original castle was destroyed in 1168 by King Henry the 2nd when the English  were trying to claim Brittany as their territory. The architecture is remarkable. 2 styles coexist in harmony:first the main building of the citadel and a separate tower is what remains of the citadel as in 1629, Cardinal de Richelieu  decided to make all non-royal fortresses disappear and 3 imposing round towers; On the courtyard side, the facade is a remarkable example of flamboyant gothic and Breton renaissance.

Take a stroll in the gardens and admire the 40 rose varieties and 160 rosebushes along the paths, the French style park and the English-style park

Stroll along the historic centre of Josselin and its cobbled streets , discover the half-timbered houses some dating as far as 1538 and then walk along the Nantes-Brest canal for some spectacular views of the castle
