Moelan sur Mer

Quimper, city of Art and History

Half an hour from Moêlan sur mer , you can experience the historic city of Quimper, the ancient capital of Cornouaille and stroll along the banks of the Odet

First, The cathedral Saint Corentin. It dates from the 13th century. It is the oldest building of this type and the greatest gothic construction in Brittany.

Next to the cathedral, the Breton museum . The upper floors are reserved for folk arts from Finistère: showing the variety and splendour of traditional costumes, furniture and decorative everyday objects. You will see the "lits-clos"beds inside their own cupboards, closed in winter to keep people warm.

Another fascinating museum just a bit further away is the Fine Arts Museum. The collection of ancient paintings come from the Northern schools (Van Haarlem, Rubens, Van Moi, Grebber, etc….). Among the museum’s treasures are works from the Pont-Aven school (Gauguin, Bernard, Sérusier, Maufra, Moret, etc...).

A great place to visit, Quimper school of Embroidery Art. A keen embroiderer, Pascal Jaouen founded l’Ecole de Broderie d’Art de Kemper  in 1995, in order to share and develop this heritage skill. His teaching method is to transpose traditional embroidery with contemporary patterns.

Then you can take a stroll  through the pedestrian medieval quarter. The charming narrow streets  with their half timbered houses and squares keep the names of their historic trades. Place au beurre was for the butter churners, rue des bouchers for the butchers etc.

let's not forget that Quimper is one of the largest pedestrian shopping centre in Brittany with a variety of shop windows, cafés and restaurants for a well deserved break!
